Streamsong Becomes A Triple Threat With Addition of Black Course

The wait is finally over for Streamsong Resort and avid golfers across the country. One of the most anticipated course openings in recent years took place in Central Florida recently as Streamsong Resort debuted its third course, Streamsong Black, designed by Gil Hanse, architect of the 2016 Olympic Golf Course.

Streamsong is now the only location in the world where players can enjoy three distinct courses designed by four legendary architects – Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw (Streamsong Red), Tom Doak (Streamsong Blue) and Gil Hanse (Streamsong Black).

“The anticipation and buzz for Streamsong Black has been remarkable,” said Rich Mack, Streamsong’s sponsor and executive vice president of The Mosaic Company, which owns Streamsong. “From this expansive sandy site, Gil and his team have uncovered a dramatic course that fits its bold landscape and flows as if it has been here for years. We are ready to introduce Streamsong Black to the public and elevate our golf experience with three must-play courses that will rival the best golf venues in the world.”

A Leading Destination

Already home to two nationally-ranked courses – Streamsong Red and Streamsong Blue – Streamsong Resort has quickly emerged as one of the best golf destinations in the U.S. and is a bucket-list destination for most players.

“To showcase Streamsong Black alongside two great examples of golf course architecture is an honor for our team,” said Gil Hanse, Streamsong Black architect. “Streamsong Black is our most eagerly anticipated opening since the debut of the Olympic Course and we’re very proud of our work on this project. The scale and shape of this property and the creative design features we were able to incorporate into this layout make Streamsong Black a fun and strategic course to play. We’re excited to take the veil off and welcome players.”

Unlike Streamsong Red and Streamsong Blue’s intertwined layouts, Streamsong Black stands alone, stretching across a much larger landscape with far-reaching sightlines across the property. Players will marvel at the natural, flowing elevation changes with rolls, tumbles and ridges that differ from the resort’s first two designs.

Hanse’s team, one of the most sought-after architecture firms in the industry, put its mark on the Streamsong Black layout with artistic design elements in its minimalistic style to deliver variety and fun throughout the round. Streamsong Black plays to a par-73 with five par-5s, each with sizeable differences in length, to give players plenty of scoring opportunities. The walk up the ninth fairway will provide a sense of anticipation as players approach the hole’s massive punchbowl green, protected by an elevated ridge. On the back nine, Hanse introduces dual green complexes on hole 13 and an infinity green on 17, creating a scenic view from the tee box of the course’s closing par-3.

One of the most noticeable design features that distinguishes Streamsong Black from Streamsong Red and Streamsong Blue is its bunkering. The lines of the bunkers are sharper, more defined, on Streamsong Black and feature a revetted style that is akin to the course in the sand belt region of Melbourne, Australia.

The Roundabout & The Gauntlet

In addition to the opening of Streamsong Black, the resort will introduce The Roundabout, a free-flowing practice facility, also designed by Hanse’s team, which features several green complexes and practice holes to accommodate the increase in play. The Roundabout provides endless opportunities and layouts for players to test their short game, challenge competitors or expose new players to the game.

The golf experience on The Roundabout will be guided by players’ creativity and imagination as they pick their own tee grounds, distances and routings, all adding to the environment of camaraderie and competition among friends. The Roundabout also includes an alternate 9th green, providing a play-in option for guests looking to play a shorter, nine-hole loop back to the Clubhouse.

The experience at Streamsong Black will also be accompanied by The Gauntlet, a dynamic 2-acre putting green, which sits immediately outside of the Streamsong Black Clubhouse. The Gauntlet was designed to challenge the putting skills of all players, beginners to pros. With the addition of these new facilities, Streamsong Resort now offers countless options for guests to customize their golf experience and play the game in non-traditional ways with shorter loops (6-hole, 9-hole and 12-hole) and modified layouts.

Finally, the Streamsong Black Clubhouse will offer an additional restaurant and gathering place for guests to complete their Streamsong experience. Enclosed by glass windows from floor to ceiling, The Bone Valley Tavern at the Streamsong Black Clubhouse will offer a casual, inviting atmosphere, featuring a large 32-seat bar, 96 additional indoor seats and ample outdoor space. The gastropub experience at Bone Valley Tavern will feature a selection of reinvented and artfully refined pub classics, by Chef Victor Kendlehart, along with some original culinary creations.

Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida – The PGA TOUR announced Wednesday that FedExCup champion Justin Thomas has been named the 2017 PGA TOUR Player of the Year as voted on by the TOUR’s membership for the 2016-17 season.

PGA TOUR members who played in at least 15 official money events this past season were eligible to vote. The balloting process ended on October 2.

“On behalf of the PGA TOUR, our congratulations to Justin Thomas on being voted the PGA TOUR Player of the Year by his peers,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “With five remarkable wins and his season-long consistency that resulted in the FedExCup title, Justin is a deserving winner of PGA TOUR Player of the Year. We also salute his excellence off the course, as he is one of the many young stars that have been tremendous ambassadors for the PGA TOUR this year.”

Thomas, a 24-year-old native of Louisville, Kentucky, captured the 2017 FedExCup following a five-win season that included his first major championship victory at the PGA Championship. His other victories came at the CIMB Classic, Sentry Tournament of Champions, Sony Open in Hawaii and Dell Technologies Championship. At the Sony Open, Thomas became the youngest player to shoot 59 on the PGA TOUR, doing so in the first round en route to a wire-to-wire victory.

Thomas joined Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth as the only players since 1960 to capture five wins, including a major, in a season before the age of 25.

In 25 starts, Thomas had a TOUR-best 12 top-10 finishes (tied with Spieth) with 19 made cuts. In addition to his five wins, Thomas added four additional top-five finishes, led by a runner-up effort at the TOUR Championship. He also took home the Arnold Palmer Award as the TOUR’s leading money-winner ($9,921,560) and finished third in Adjusted Scoring Average (69.359). Last week in his Presidents Cup debut, Thomas posted a record of 3-1-1 for the victorious U.S. Team at Liberty National Golf Club.

Thomas, who will receive the Jack Nicklaus Trophy for winning PGA TOUR Player of the Year, was selected for the honour over Dustin Johnson, Hideki Matsuyama and Jordan Spieth.

PING Expands Sigma G Line With New Mallets

PING has never been short on putter options. Well, maybe a little bit back when they were founded in 1959 but that soon changed.

This past week they added two more flat sticks to their offerings, and two mallets at that. The Craz-E and the Tyne H represent an expansion of their Sigma G series, which have quickly become popular with golf consumers.

“By broadening the options for golfers with the Craz-E, an enduring classic, and the eye- catching Tyne H, we’re able to introduce more players of all abilities to the phenomenal feel and full-face forgiveness of the Sigma G putters,” said John A. Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. “The uniquely softer feel and satisfying sound come from the combination of high-grade elastomer and fully machined aerospace-grade aluminum over the entire face. With improved ball-speed consistency and forgiveness, golfers will make more putts and gain confidence from any distance, and that’s going to bring down scores.”

For those familiar with PING products they will easily recognize the Craz-E look and shape. Over the years variation of the model have been used to win more than 70 events on the pro tours worldwide. It is distinguished by a ball-width center sight line, and significant heel-toe and back weighting to achieve a high MOI for maximizing stability and balance.

The Tyne H is an offset of the original Tyne putter. This variation has an Anser-style hosel, however, giving it some offset and more suitability to a player with a slight arc in their stroke. Another feature is a white sight line on top that contrast with the Black Nickel finish for easier alignment.

Both models feature the Sigma G face insert.

Sigma G face inserts are made of Pebax Elastomer, a lightweight, high-energy-return compound utilized in the soles of athletic shoes for its elasticity which provides the putters a uniquely soft yet responsive feel. PING’s True Roll Face Technology provides full-face forgiveness. Precision milled from 6061 aerospace-grade aluminum, the face pattern varies in-depth and pitch to improve performance and touch on putts of every length.

Impact stability with Sigma G is increased as a result of the larger face-insert cavities that allow weight savings to be re-distributed farther toward the perimeter to increase the MOI. Optimal CG positions help reduce skid and initiate forward roll. The Craz-E and Tyne H join 16 previously released blades, mid-mallets and mallets available to fit any stroke type, preferred look, and alignment style. All are finished in Platinum or Black Nickel and feature a contrasting face tone to assist in setup and alignment consistency.

Two proprietary PING Pistol tapered grips are offered. The PP60 (midsize, flat front with tapered contour) and PP62 (oversize, more rounded shape) are engineered to fit the contours of the hands.

CDN. MSRP: Craz-E: $280; Tyne H: $280

Adjustable-length shafts are available for an upcharge of CDN. MSRP: $40.

S-Drive Provide Colourful Pop To ECCO Product Offerings

Running shoe inspiration? The new ECCO S-Drive golf shoe has it as the company debuts a lightweight product with a very technical construction that they say will provide both flexibility and stability.

“We’ve taken inspiration from the best features of modern running shoes to make a golf shoe that is unlike anything else on the market and, fundamentally, will really perform,” says ECCO Lead Designer Andrzej Bikowski. “It holds every facet necessary to play golf at the highest level, including stability, support and ECCO’s quintessential comfort.”

ECCO S Drive

The immediate take-away from an initial look is the distinct styling of this model, a big departure from some of the company’s more conservative designs. The asymmetrical enclosure and curved patterning sharply separate the look from other golf shoes.

The upper uses a soft, breathable mesh (inclusive of microfiber) that ECCO states will “move freely with the foot and enhance fit, feel and durability.”

Aligning with the upper is a midsole that has been reinforced with a “stability wing” intended to prevent the foot from rolling during the swing.

Like all ECCO shoes, the company says they are made in company-owned factories and feature a one piece design with no glue or stitching used for greater integrity,

Instruction – Become The Ruler of The Greens

Many golfers struggle with both the aim of their club face and path of their putter at impact. It’s often easy to see there is an issue, but just how do you go about correcting it?  And what if you don’t have access to modern putter measurement technology?

Grab ten dollars and head to your local hardware store. Once you do that, purchase a flat metal metre stick, and make a visit to your favourite practice green for a some training time.

Set up with the end of the ruler that does not have the hole in it next to the putting cup. Place your golf ball in the rule hole hole. Now use the edge of the ruler, and the vision of the ruler leading to the cup, to help you align to the target.

Stroke the ball and see if you can keep it on the ruler all the way into the cup. If you have a clubface that is open or closed, have a poor contact point, or vary the path away from the target line you will find that the ball will roll off the ruler before it gets to the hole.

With a very slick putting surface (the metre stick) you’ll also need some good touch to deal with the stimpmeter speed of about 20!

It’s harder than you think you but you soon find that an efficient and consistent stroke will allow you to successfully drain putts.

Test yourself out of ten attempts and see how much you can improve.

Your puttering, especially on one metre putts, will be all the better for it.

She made 10 LPGA starts on Conditional Status in 2017 but Quebec’s Anne-Catherine Tanguay will have many more opportunities on that tour in 2018 thanks to her play this season on the Symetra Tour.

Tanguay, a 26 year-old graduate of the University of Oklahoma, completed her campaign on the LPGA Tour’s development circuit on Monday in 8th place on their Volvik Race to The Card. The top ten finish earns her Category 9 LPGA TOUR access for 2018.

“It’s been my dream, and when you work your whole life to get there it’s such a big accomplishment,” said Tanguay on achieving her LPGA status on Monday at the Symetra Tour Championship. “Words are hard to explain what I’m feeling, and I think it’s hitting me today. It’s just awesome, it’s such a good Tour, and the level and recognition all over the world. I’m really excited to start traveling the world next year.”

Tanguay earned $76,663 on the Symetra Tour in 2017, propelled by six straight top 15 finishes to start the year including a tie for second at the IOA Championship and a third-place finish at the Gateway Classic at Longbow Golf Club. She highlighted the season with a win in September at the Garden City Charity Classic.

A recent staff proposal was accepted by City Council that would see the city-owned golf course be converted to other uses, but one interested citizen is keeping the fight for the course founded in 1974 alive.

While the building suffered extensive damage fortunately there was no one in the clubhouse at the time of the fire (it occurred around 10 p.m.) and no one was injured according to Director of Operations Erik Laframboise.

As of Friday morning the fire department and police were still on-site and staff had not yet been given the opportunity to access the building but hoped to be able to do so on Friday afternoon.

As a result of the fire the club had to move their season closing celebration to a local restaurant.

The club is closing for the year this weekend and offering limited services as a result of the fire.

Laframboise stated in a letter to other ClubLink members. “This is upsetting news for all of us but thankfully, everyone is ok and brighter days are ahead.”

We will provide updates when any are available.

RBC PGA Scramble National Final Comes Down To Final Putt

A world-class setting, teams from around the nation, and one final putt that would determine the outcome. The National Final of the 2017 RBC PGA Scramble presented by The Lincoln Motor Company at Cabot Links had all that was needed for a memorable ending.

On the windy shoreline of Inverness, Nova Scotia, it all came down to Rodney Webber, a member of Cordova Bay Golf Club in Victoria, B.C.. Webber needed to make a four-foot putt to win the championship for his team and he responded with the stroke of his life. The ball found the bottom of the cup and celebration was on as Webber and teammates Phil Kondrak, Eric Smith, Eric Watson and PGA of Canada professional Nate Ollis secured the victory by the slimmest of margins.

They surpassed the team of Jim Reid, Wendy Reid, Teresa Alm, Brad Revell, and PGA professional Chris Barber of the Landings Golf & Teaching Centre in Kingston, Ontario by a mere 0.8, with a 46 under par total.

“I’m no professional golfer, but standing over that putt I definitely felt like one,” Webber said. “That was definitely the most pressure-packed putt I’ve ever had in my life.”

Twenty-two teams competed in the National Finals, playing two rounds over Cabot Links and one over Cabot Cliffs. Both courses have been highly regarded by critics from around the world since their openings.

The National Final was the culmination of a season-long competition that began at a local level and also featured regional finals.

“Honestly, we couldn’t have asked for a better week,” conveyed the team from Cordova Bay. “We can’t thank RBC and The Lincoln Motor Company enough for supporting this amazing event,” they said, adding, “the experience from the very beginning has been world class—from the golf courses to the meals and the lodging—everything has been the best.”

In her first appearance since winning the Mckayson New Zealand Women’s Open, followed by a vacation in both that country and Vietnam, Brooke Henderson showed no signs of rust as she tied for 8th at the LPGA KEB Hana Bank Championship.

Rounds of 71, 67, 68, and 72 (-10) earned her a 7th top ten finish on the LPGA TOUR for 2017 and also keeps her in 4th place in the Race To CME Globe.

Earning $43,072 for her play in Incheon, South Korea boosted Henderson’s year-long earnings to $1,399,905, also placing her in 4th on the season-long Money List.

Finishing nine strokes ahead of Henderson at -19 and earning the win was Jin Young Ko. A previous winner on the Korean LPGA Tour, this was the first LPGA Tour win for Ko and doing it in her home country was extra special.

“I think I was especially honoured, and I think it’s especially meaningful, that I was able to win in front of my fans,” shared Ko through a translator. “It was a first for me to play in front of such a large crowd. I think that is also going to be an experience that can help me grow further as a player.”

Canada’s Alena Sharp was also in the field. Rounds of 74,72,72, and 71 earned her a share of 46th place.

As always, the rage prone pro who is never afraid to be himself did it with a touch of his personal style – he was wearing a pair of Nike Air Jordan 1 golf shoes. For more on Perez and his intriguing story, see this Players’ Tribune story from earlier this season.

At the same time as Perez was claiming victory, Canada’s Nick Taylor was recording his second strong finish of the young season. Taylor, who tied for 9th at the Safeway Open to start the year, earned a share of 13th place in Malaysia. It was a big showing among a strong field and boosted the 29 year-old to $292,450 for the season, nearly a quarter of what he earned in 2016/17.

The three other Canadians in the field did not fare as well. Richard T. Lee and Adam Hadwin tied for 51st while Graham DeLaet was another stroke back in a share of 54th.

European Tour Italian Open – Connelly Moves Up On Day Four

Clare, Nova Scotia’s Austin Connelly used a final round 65 (-7) to push his way up 13 spots and earn a tie for 21st at the European Tour’s Italian Open.

The dual citizen of the USA and Canada posted scores of 68, 65, 72, and 65 (270) for the week and recorded only 5 bogies through the four days of play.

It was a nice rebound after two poor outings since he secured his 2018 European Tour card with a 2nd place finish at the KLM Open a month ago.

Tyrell Hatton secured the victory at Golf Club Milano with a four round total of -21, including a dramatic birdie on the last hole. It follows a win at the Dunhill Links Championship.

“As Chairman, I will always look to Jones and Roberts as a source of wisdom and inspiration. I fully subscribe to their mandate of constant improvement and their commitment to maintaining the highest standard in all that we do. I pledge to use my deep-rooted respect for the customs and traditions they established to further elevate our Club and Tournament, while continuing their mission of contributing to the development of the sport around the world.

“I would like to thank Billy Payne, our esteemed Chairman Emeritus, who appointed me as his successor. His confidence in allowing me this honor has already had a profound impact on my life. I am grateful to consider him a friend and mentor, both personally and professionally.”
